Day 1. Reykjavík – Myrkholt
Afternoon drive from Reykjavik to Myrkholt where horses and staff are waiting for us. We will get to know each other, have dinner, and gather strength for the adventure that lies ahead. So do the horses that are grazing in the nearby field.

Day 2 (Tour 1) Myrkholt – Fremstaver

The trails are soft and the views are impressive into Haukadalur, where we look over the entire Geysir hot-spring area and the Árnessýsla county. We head east towards the river Sandá, where we spend the night.

Day 3 Fremstaver – Árbúðir Mountain Cabin
We start the ride at the river Sandá, the sandy river. In the distance we see the Blue Mountain, we will be riding to the west of it. We cross Hvítá (White river) and enjoy the all-surrounding scenery and the view to the glacier-filled lake Hvítárvatn, from where Hvítá flows. We are officially in the Icelandic wilderness! We will spend the night in Árbúðir on the banks of river Svartá (The Black river). The tracks we are riding have been ridden by Icelanders through the centuries. If only they could talk!

Day 4 Árbúðir – Kerlingarfjöll
We continue our ride along the rough lava field Kjalhraun enjoying the spectacular view of the two striking glaciers: Langjökull to the west and Hofsjökull to the east. The terrain is soft and sandy – ideal to ride the tölt!  The ride takes us towards Kerlingarfjöll, “The Old Woman’s (or witches) Mountains”, a beautiful cluster of rugged colorful mountains. People did not travel these mountains in the old days since they were believed to be a hiding place for outlaws. They might still be! We enter a valley where there is a beautiful geothermal pool for us to dive into.

Day 5 Around Kerlingarfjöll

This day we will ride without the herd and the ride will take us higher up in the mountain range, above the famous Hveradalir, the “valley of hot springs. “ The valley is surrounded by yellow and red rhyolite mountains and is one of the largest and most fascinating geothermal areas in Iceland. You can see tuff stone pillars, steaming vents, clay geysers, and bubbling hot springs. Take a look around and enjoy! In the evening we can again bath in the warm pool.

Day 6 Kerlingarfjöll – Stakamúli – Árbúðir

We are all well rested after yesterday. And we’d better be – we will be riding fast today for a long stretch! We are heading west towards the big glacier, Langjökull. We are crossing the big lava field Kjalhraun, which is over 7000 years old and stretches through half of the Kjölur plateau.

Day 7 Árbúðir – Fremstaver

We are heading south, and you can feel it riding the horses – they know they are on their way back home! After a short ride we pass a special place called in the nearby glacial river called Skipholtskrókur. It may sound strange, but many believe this is the place where the Holy Grail Jesus drank from in the Last Supper can be found. It is supposed to be kept in a large secret vault in the area. As we are heading south notice how the vegetation changes from moon-like to more and more green. Look around and enjoy the view! The night we will stay just south of the mighty Bláfjall mountain.

Day 7 (Tour 2) Fremstaver – Haukadalsheiðin – Myrkholt

Now we are riding back home -The trails are soft and the views are impressive into Haukadalur, where we look over the entire Geysir hot-spring area and the Árnessýsla county. We head down through Haukadalsskógur forest, the biggest of its kind in Iceland, and towards the Geysir area. There we unsaddle and leave our horses in a paddock in one of the most well-known geological hotspots in the world, where we visit the world-famous geysers Geysir and Strokkur before returning to Myrkholt.

Day 8: Departure to Reykjavik in the morning
